Mrs. Fetney Louise Godwin Wilkins entered into eternal rest on January 8, 2020 at Carver Living Center. She was the only child of the late Jessie James Godwin and Estell Watson Godwin Lawrence. She was educated in the Durham City Schools. She always discussed the good old days at Lyon Park Elementary School.
In her late teen years, she moved to Richmond, Virginia and was employed in several food establishments. She met the love of her life, Phillip Wilkins in Richmond and they were married in 1964. She relocated with her husband to Baltimore, Maryland. While in Baltimore she was employed in the garment industry until she developed medical problems. After her husband's retirement they relocated to Henderson, North Carolina.
As a child she attended Second Baptist Church, now First Calvary Baptist Church. She attended Southern Baptist while in Baltimore. After relocating to Henderson, she joined Woodsworth Baptist Church, her husband’s family church. She also supported Morehead Baptist church in Durham.
Mrs. Wilkins enjoyed being a homemaker. She took great pride in her cooking and felt she was second to none. She enjoyed sharing her favorite recipes and hearing others make positive comments about her pound and apple cakes, sweet potato pies, cabbage, ox tails, etc. She loved flowers outside. She was an immaculate housekeeper and enjoyed decorating her home until her health failed.
Lou was a true people person, never met a stranger. She kept family and friends laughing with her comical comments. She greeted most of her friends and associates with “Cousin”. Shortly after becoming a resident at Carver she acquired the name “Booty Green” because of a popular dance known back in the day, which she performed often causing lots of laughs.
Mrs. Wilkins's husband, Phillip, preceded her in death in 1987. She leaves to cherish her memories her son Sterling Watson, New Jersey, dedicated cousin who grew up with her in the same household; Ulysses Jackson, Washington D.C., Delores Watson Estes, Roy Watson Jr. (Barbara), Randolph Watson (Mattie) and Wilma Watson Young, all of Durham, NC, dedicated in laws Louise Wilkins Hargrove, niece in law (William) and William Hargrove “Man”, nephews in law, all of Henderson, NC, Daphne Williams, former daughter in law of Durham, NC. A host of relatives in the Watson family as well as in the Wilkins family in Henderson and many friends.
