The Life and Legacy of Mother Cora Bell Garland Turner
Affectionately known as “Cora Bell”
As the sun set on a life well lived, Heaven opened its gates to welcome home one of God’s most faithful servants. Wrapped in grace and rooted in love, Mother Cora Bell Garland Turner exchanged her earthly labor for eternal rest, leaving behind a legacy that will never fade.
Born on December 28, 1951, in the Blanch community of Caswell County, North Carolina, she was the youngest of eight children to the late James and Rachael Willis Garland. A late Christmas gift to her family, Cora Bell entered the world carrying peace, purpose, and light. Her quiet strength, deep compassion, and faith in God became the foundation of a life devoted to service and love.
She joined High Rock Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Harvey Gwynn, beginning a lifelong journey of devotion to God and community. A dedicated and faithful member, she formally served on the Usher Board, lent her helping hands to the Kitchen Committee, and supported various auxiliaries and outreach projects through the High Rock Community Center.
Professionally, she broke barriers at Burlington Industries in Elon, North Carolina, becoming the first Black woman to serve in the Planning Department. After more than 35 years of faithful service, she retired, only to continue her purpose through the North Carolina Cooperative Extension. There, she led Caswell County’s Teen Court Program, guiding students to statewide recognition, and taught families through the Parenting Cooperative Program, impacting countless lives across North Carolina.
Her work earned recognition from the State of North Carolina Cooperative Extension, the Top Parenting Distinction Award, and the Influential Black Women of North Carolina, but her true reward was in the lives she touched and the hope she helped restore.
A two-time Breast Cancer Survivor, Cora Bell turned her testimony into ministry encouraging women across the county through Relay for Life of Caswell County and health education programs. Her resilience, faith, and courage inspired all who knew her.
She loved serving her community, volunteering at food drives, senior programs, and health awareness events. She moved through life with quiet strength and unmatched grace, always carrying herself with dignity, style, and a polished smile that reflected her inner light.
Her greatest joy was her family. She stood proudly beside her sons Carl Jr., Corey, and Courtney as their foundation, encourager, and first believer. From Buggies Exclusive Apparel to CLT Diner, from service in fire and law enforcement to the founding of the Dapper Distinguished Men Society, she supported every dream and every step of the journey. Her love was present, powerful, and unwavering the kind that built men of faith, vision, and purpose.
In her family, she was the cornerstone the steady compass who guided with wisdom, humility, and love. Her signature greeting, “Hey, love,” captured who she was: gracious, genuine, and welcoming to all. She also played a vital role in G&G Catering and Concessions, helping her sisters sustain and expand the business after the passing of her sister Monnie.
Spiritually, she also found joy worshipping with her extended church family at Sweet Gum Grove Missionary Baptist Church, where she supported her son during his tenure working with the music ministry. Her faith was steadfast, and her love for God shaped every part of her journey. She walked in purpose with the strength of “Order My Steps” and praised through trials with “The Blood Still Works.” Her life’s testimony declared “Somehow I Made It,” and her worship proclaimed, “How Excellent,” “Total Praise,” “I’m Free,” and “T’will Be Sweet.”
After a lifetime of pouring into others with unwavering love, Mother Cora Bell Garland Turner traded her earthly duties for her heavenly rest. Her heart was the home where her family found comfort, her wisdom their compass, and her faith their inheritance.
She leaves to cherish her memory: her husband Carl Turner Sr.; her sons and the heartbeat and pride of her life, Carl Jr., Corey, and Courtney Turner; her daughter-in-law Rhonda H. Turner; and her cherished grandson Caden Turner. She is also survived by her loving friend and last living sister, Stella Gravers; sisters-in-love Bettie, Joanna, and Mary Garland, Mary Virginia Mitchell; and brother-in-law Wallace (Tammy); along with a host of nieces, nephews, godchildren, adopted sons and daughters, and countless friends who were touched by her love.
She now joins the reunion in Heaven with her parents, James and Rachael Garland; sisters Bessie Oliver Madden, Lorene Garland, and Monnie Pearl Glass; and brothers James, Norton, and Robert Garland.
Her work is done, her faith fulfilled, and her crown received. Though her voice is now still, her lessons echo through every heart she touched. The flower may have faded, but her garden of love will forever remain in bloom.
“She is clothed with strength and dignity; her wisdom speaks even in her silence.”
— Proverbs 31:25–26
