Larette (Barksdale) Hairston

Larette “Poochie” Hairston was born July 30, 1957, to the late Joseph and Norma Jean Barksdale. Larette was raised here in Halifax County and attended Halifax County Public Schools (Mary Bethune). 

She joined Greater Mayfield Church at an early age under the preaching and teaching of Pastor Schofield and later under Suffrigan Bishop Bernard Wilkins. She remained a faithful member even as a resident of Burlington, North Carolina. She later married Jesse Lee Sims Jr and her only son was born. She later met and remarried Ernest Hairston.

Larette leaves to cherish her loving memories one son: Jesse L Sims Jr (Kora) of Halifax, VA. Six grandchildren: Zy’Kajia Sims and DeMeisha Canada of South Boston, VA, Datwann Canada of Gloversville, NY, Myeciah Tucker, Ebonee Tucker, and Jhaniyah Canada of Halifax, VA. Larette leaves one sister: Mary Ward (Steve). 

Larette is preceded in death by two brothers: Robert Barksdale and Joseph Barksdale, one sister: Francis Barksdale. Peggy Venable, Alice Venable, and Doris Wilborn were three of her most devoted friends along with her nurses Tracy Haith and Dalisha Smith, who was also a devoted niece. Larette also had a host of other nieces, nephews, friends, and family that meant a lot to her.
